TricorBraun, one of North America’s largest suppliers of jars, bottles and other rigid packaging components, had a very successful year by winning three of the nine awards presented to U.S. businesses at the 2013WorldStar International Packaging Competition.
A total of 316 packages from 33 countries were involved in the annual, world-wide competition, recently conducted in Singapore. To participate in the WorldStar event, companies must have been recognized in a national competition such as the AmeriStar awards competition.
TricorBraun awards were received for packaging for Roxor, a new Gin that was conceived to meet the public’s rising interest in unique spirits; Likety Stik, a low calorie dog treat that is packaged in a deodorant bottle, and 3M Auto Care Products, whose packaging was re-designed with an eye to be environmental compatibility and economy.
The Roxor bottle’s elegant square shape and flat windowpane relief were inspired by the buildings that typify world-famous skylines. It is made with cosmetic-grade super flint glass which sparkles in the light. The bottle’s parting-line is placed on a diagonal so it cannot be seen across the face.
The windowpane relief at the bottle’s waist serves as a grip and provides the space for a two-pass silkscreen label. The 750-ml bottle uses a 33-400 custom light-weight polypropylene continuous thread closure that is embossed with the spirit’s name. TricorBaun’s customer was New Artisan Spirits, Houston, Texas
Likety Stik was set apart by inventiveness. The dog treat is packaged in a traditional roller-ball deodorant bottle that neatly dispenses a low-calorie, liquid reward as the dog licks the roller-ball. The innovative use of an existing container also produced important economic advantages. The deodorant bottle eliminated the expense associated with the development of custom molds, and it runs on existing, high-speed filling lines. The TricorBraun customer was PetSafe, Knoxville, Tenn.
3M Automotive Car Care products were distinguished by an environmental commitment that annually eliminates 63,063 pounds of PET from the waste system, at current sales volume. The newly-designed package is manufactured with PET; including 25 percent post-consumer recycled material, rather than PVC.
The new containers lowered distribution costs by reducing package weight 12.5 percent. The newly designed packages also accepted a less costly closure. Even with the change in resins, the package continues to protect the physical integrity of the product and the new closure provides a better seal. 3M is headquartered in St. Paul, Minn.
