If you started drinking coffee when you went to college, you remember the bitter taste and the warm buzz.
Maybe you heard the National Institute of Health has reported coffee drinkers live longer, according to the National Coffee Association May 17. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Society and AARP. There were 400,000 people over 14 years tracked, 229,000 men and 173,000 women 50-71.
Male risk was reduced six percent with one cup, 10 percent with two to three cups and 10 percent for women at six or more cups, the study showed.
The association was created in 1911. In June Chinese scientists found coffee drinking had a link to reduced risk of colorectal cancers. The Keurig company’s name is derived from a Dutch word meaning “excellence.” In 1998 it created the single cup brewing system for gourmet coffee, a fast way without grinding beans. Slowly Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. since its founding in 1981 as a small café in Waitsfield, Vermont, it has gone public and acquired the remainder of Keurig in 2006.
The single-cup systems are jumping according to a study by the NCA.
“Ownership has jumped to 10 percent from 7 percent last year, and 36 percent of those said they have owned their single-cup brewer for less than six months,” the association reported. “Perception of the quality of coffee from single-cup systems continued to grow stronger with 25 percent rating the brewers as ‘excellent’ versus 15 percent who did so last year.”
The 2012 numbers of those who consider single-cup brewers excellent and very good were at 57 percent positive, versus 45 percent in 2011, according to the association.
“Daily coffee consumption soared by seven percentage points, moving ahead of soft drinks, according to the 2012 National Coffee Drinking Trends from the National Coffee Association,” the NCA reports.
Did you know that gourmet coffee consumption grew from 37 percent of all cups consumed in the United States in 2011 to 46 percent in 2012?
In March the NCA held its national convention at the Charleston Place Hotel.
There was a welcome reception at the S.C. Aquarium March 22. The 2012 NCA Coffee Summit will be held Oct. 10-12 in Philadelphia, Pa.
