Overwhelming response to social media campaign helps Sunbelt Bakery promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation
After completing its social media campaign in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sunbelt Bakery announced today the company will make a $50,000 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF). The donation will help support NBCF and its efforts to save lives through early detection of breast cancer and by providing free mammograms for those in need.
For the fourth consecutive year, Sunbelt Bakery has conducted a special social media campaign during the month of October in an effort to increase awareness of breast cancer and help raise funds for NBCF. This year, Sunbelt Bakery expanded the campaign to include Facebook and Twitter users, meaning the company pledged to donate $1 to NBCF for every new Facebook like or Twitter follower the company gained during the month of October, up to $50,000.
According to company officials, this year’s campaign was a resounding success as the company reached its goal of 50,000 new Facebook likes and Twitter followers. In all, Sunbelt Bakery has now raised $160,000 for NBCF, bringing the total given by the company towards the fight against breast cancer to more than $350,000 during the past five years.
“One of the core values for the family that founded Sunbelt Bakery is personal health and wellness,” said Jeff Badger, brand manager for Sunbelt Bakery. “The National Breast Cancer Foundation is a true embodiment of this core value, and this is why we are pleased to make this $50,000 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and support its efforts to raise awareness about early detection of breast cancer, expand access to free mammograms for those in need and foster hope in the fight against breast cancer.”
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 232,000 women in America will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and more than 39,600 will die from the disease. In fact, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer also affects men as more than 2,200 men in America are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, of which more than 400 of them will die from the disease.
Mammograms are among the best early-detection methods for breast cancer and help save thousands of lives each year. When breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98.6 percent. Unfortunately, a recent study from the American Cancer Society shows approximately 66.5 percent of women older than 40 years of age reported getting a mammogram in the past two years.
“We sincerely thank Sunbelt Bakery for their loyal, continued support of our mission,” said Janelle Hail, founder and CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. “The funds raised by Sunbelt Bakery’s social media campaign will have a direct, positive impact by helping us provide free mammograms and important patient navigation services for women in need.”
Badger continued, “Breast cancer is an issue that touches nearly everyone, and the Sunbelt Bakery community is no exception. On behalf of Sunbelt Bakery, I want to personally thank the public for their incredible response to our social media campaign. We are honored to provide needed funding to an organization that is leading the way in the fight against breast cancer.”
