SG Blocks, Inc. a leading designer, innovator and fabricator of container-based structures–today announced that The Terrace, the award-winning cocktail bar BlackTail’s expansion, was delivered to Pier A in Battery Park August 10.
In partnership with Elle Woodworking, architectural design and fabrication group of commercial and residential projects, SG Blocks has constructed this seasonal bar using its signature GreenSteel™ product, the structural core, and shell of an SG Blocks structure.
This outside bar is designed like Hemingway’s beloved fishing boat, Pilar, and has been built using traditional boat-building materials and methods — aligning with the nautical theme of its Battery Park location.
“It’s exceptionally rewarding for SG Blocks to be able to bring this innovative modern bar to New Yorkers and tourists strolling around Battery Park this summer,” said Paul Galvin, Chairman and CEO of SG Blocks. “We hope to replicate this model in other markets for both temporary facilities like The Terrace and more permanent structures.”
“We were thrilled about this project because we were able to utilize a modern approach to construction coupled with our expertise in design to create a truly contemporary, cutting-edge bar,” said Marc Vecchiarelli, Founder, and President of Elle Woodworking. “We are confident it will be enjoyed by New Yorkers and tourists alike in the warm months to come.”
The Terrace’s story dates back to the early days of aviation, where it was a pioneering presence. Known properly as Aeromarine, it was part business, part daydream, a place of dreamers and daredevils; of hard-headed industrialists with a soft spot for adventure. The nickname, BlackTail, came about through Harry Bruno, the company’s resident promotional genius. It was he who suggested the tailfins of Aeromarine’s meagre fleet be painted black — so they would be instantly recognizable from the ground.
SG Blocks has already collaborated with numerous companies in the food and beverage space. Clients have included major corporations such as Taco Bell and Starbucks, as well as midsized favorites such as Bareburger. The firm has also worked with small businesses across the country — building Smoky Park Supper Club in Asheville as well as supply the containers for Coney Smorgasburg at Coney Art Walls.
SG Blocks utilizes code-engineered cargo shipping containers to construct and provide safe, durable and environmentally-friendly structures. It has an exclusive ESR number, which was granted by the International Code Council, ensuring its ability to meet and exceed all international building codes.
