Chef Alex Abreu, self-proclaimed as Boston Seaport’s most unknown yet longest-standing chef, has now stepped into the role of Executive Chef at YOTEL Boston, overseeing its restaurant concepts, Vela Seaport and Deck 12. In his new position, Chef Abreu is set to bring his Seaport flare and family recipes to the neighborhood restaurant, beginning with the launch of Vela Seaport’s fresh menus. These new seasonal menus have unique, cozy flavors and tried and true Bostonian classics.
“Boston Seaport holds a special place in my heart,” said Chef Abreu. “I’ve witnessed its transformation from marshland to the bustling district it is today, and I’m excited to continue sharing my culinary creations with both the local community and visitors alike.”
Born and raised in Boston, Chef Abreu brings a unique journey and a rich heritage to his role, blending flavors and traditions that span generations. Inspired by his Puerto Rican family’s bold, authentic recipes and his wife’s Italian heritage, Chef Abreu’s new menus honor his roots while pushing boundaries, featuring dishes inspired by beloved family traditions and recipes. Chef Abreu’s story is a testament to following one’s dreams, bringing together diverse influences in dishes that feel both familiar and adventurous. Though he initially pursued a career in real estate, he pivoted to his true passion for cooking during the uncertainty of the 2008 housing crisis, which aligned with the birth of his first daughter. His passion was kindled in childhood as he helped his grandmother and mother prepare unique dishes like Puerto Rican mondongo and mofongo, and eccentric bites like blood sausage.
Following his pivot from broker to the kitchen, Chef Abreu’s culinary journey began at Renaissance Boston Seaport Hotel in Boston’s Seaport where he quickly rose through the ranks, followed by notable positions at prestigious hotels, including Senior Sous Chef at The Ritz-Carlton Boston Common. Most recently, Chef Abreu served as the Executive Chef de Cuisine at the historic Boston Harbor Hotel, which he left to spearhead the relaunch of Vela Seaport at YOTEL Boston as Executive Chef.
With over a decade of experience, Chef Abreu has established himself as a culinary innovator, known for his approachable yet refined cuisine. His expertise spans from kitchen logistics to wine pairing, honed during his time at some of Boston’s most esteemed hotels. As Executive Chef at YOTEL Boston, he will continue to create unforgettable dining experiences, driven by his passion for culinary arts and commitment to mentoring the next generation of chefs.
Vela Seaport, named after the constellation in the shape of a ship’s sail, takes diners on a culinary journey across the world from the comfort of their table by the sea. Once seated, Chef Abreu will welcome new and returning guests with fresh, inventive dishes that explore cultures and global cuisines.
Chef Abreu’s new menu at Vela Seaport features plates like roasted Delicata Squash with sweet herbed ricotta and Meyer Lemon vinaigrette, as well as Ahi Tuna Flatbread with togarashi, spicy aioli, avocado cream, crispy shallots and arugula. Signature dishes include Wild Mushroom Tagliatelle with locally foraged mushrooms, housemade tagliatelle, fresh herbs, and a white wine sauce, and Halibut with Kennebunk potato, corn chowder, and chimichurri. For dessert, diners can indulge in treats like a cozy Apple Crisp, made in-house and served with locally made vanilla ice cream.
Guests can pair their meal with Vela Seaport’s ample selection of wines, draft beer, and craft cocktails like the Measured Mile, made with Tito’s Vodka, butterfly tea, Dolin Blanc, blackberry puree and lemon; The Liquid Courage with blended scotch, lemon juice, pure maple syrup, cranberry, pomegranate, and ginger beer; and the La Toxica with ghost tequila, pink guava, lime juice, and tiki bitters.
