Visit Oakland partners with Platform by the James Beard Foundation (Platform by JBF) for the second year to host an immersive culinary experience. James Beard nominated Chefs Geoff Davis of Burdell, Intu-On Kornnawong of Jo’s Modern Thai, and Finn Stern of Daytrip have created a menu that brings their three distinct gastronomic styles to one incredible dining experience.
A testament to Oakland’s diverse culture, the collaborative dinner at Platform includes comforting soul food favorites with an innovative twist from Chef Geoff Davis, flavorful modern Thai cuisine from Chef Intu-On Kornnawong, and fermentation-driven dishes from Chef Finn Stern. The three chefs have joined together to bring a unique and inviting dining experience to their guests at Platform by JBF.
Oakland is known as one of the most progressive and diverse cities in the U.S. with 125 languages spoken in The Town. “We are delighted continue our partnership with Platform by JBF and once again bring Oakland’s diverse culinary offerings to New York City,” commented Peter Gamez, President & CEO of Visit Oakland. “It is an amazing opportunity to share our Oakland spirit, spotlight our talented chefs and celebrate their remarkable stories and delicious cuisine.”
The Collab Dinner: Oakland’s James Beard–Recognized Chefs Presented By Visit Oakland will take place on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 7:00 p.m., and will feature three of Oakland’s most popular local restaurants: Burdell, Jo’s Modern Thai, and Daytrip.
About the Chefs
Geoff Davis of Burdell, 2024 Best Chef California finalist, will prepare welcoming soul food inspired by his maternal grandmother. Born just outside Philadelphia, Geoff grew up in Modesto, California where he developed an early love for dining at restaurants, selecting produce with his grandfather, and cooking through cookbooks. In 2022, Geoff embarked on a new journey called Burdell, which began as a series of pop-ups centered on local produce and the Soul Food he remembered from his grandparents’ table.
Intu-On Kornnawong of Jo’s Modern Thai, 2023 Best Chef California semifinalist, will prepare a dish that combines flavors from her upbringing in Northern Thailand with local ingredients. Chef Intu comes from the small town of Udon Thani in the Issan region of Thailand and began her culinary journey at a young age, helping her family cook meals where she learned traditional Thai recipes. Seeking to broaden her horizons and refine her skills, Chef Intu ventured to the United States, where she had the privilege of working under some of the industry’s most renowned chefs. She now has an innate ability to harmonize flavors, bringing together the bold and delicate, the spicy and soothing, the traditional and modern elements of Thai cuisine.
Finn Stern of Daytrip, 2024 Best Chef California semifinalist, has created an innovative menu of seasonal fermentation-driven dishes and natural wines. Finn Stern is the Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Oakland’s Daytrip, celebrated for its playful, fermentation-driven food. Committed to more than just a compelling dining experience, Daytrip actively strives for a more equitable future in the industry, particularly focusing on its workforce.
Menu items will include Chilled Razor Clams with Charred Alliums, Fermented Red Fresno Liquid, Cilantro Oil, and Green Garlic Aïoli; Sweet Corn with Tierra Vegetables Grits, Sea Urchin Butter, and Shrimp Gravy; Nam Tok Moo with Grilled Pork, Crispy Rice, Pluots, Laab Herbs, and Daytrip’s Fermented Vegetables.
