August 15, 2012 marks the day that America’s most famous television culinarian, Julia Child, would have turned 100 years old. In 2004, she passed away at the age of 92. Les Dames d’Escoffier (LDEI), a women’s professional culinary association to which Ms. Child belonged, is honoring the special day with “Julia” celebrations in 25 of its chapter cities around the country in August and September. She was awarded the Grande Dame designation by the group, its highest award, more than 25 years ago. She said of the group, “Les Dames d’Escoffier is a leadership culinary organization composed of women who have not only achieved success in their professions but who contribute significantly to their communities.”
Premiering on public television in 1963, she brought French cuisine and cooking into the homes of America with a flair that was pure “Julia.” She made classic cooking fun and approachable, all while wearing pearls. She was also a noted culinary educator and renowned cookbook author. She was nominated for eight Emmy Awards; winning three. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor by President George W. Bush in 2004. Her kitchen was donated to the Smithsonian after her death. From New York to her hometown of Pasadena, Julia’s extraordinary legacy is being celebrated in 25 Les Dames Chapters with ‘60s dress cocktail parties and her signature pearls with suppers including recipes from her famous cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”

In addition to all of the individual LDEI chapter celebrations, the Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts (www.juliachildfoundation.org <http://www.juliachildfoundation.org> ) awarded the Les dames d‘Escoffier a generous donation to increase LDEI’s Legacy Award grants for new and upcoming women in the field. The Foundation was created by Julia in 1995 for the purpose of supporting 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. LDEI Dame Suzy Davidson, who works with the Foundation, expressed that this grant was in “perfect alignment with the Foundation’s goal to further Julia’s passion for gastronomy and the culinary arts, her far-reaching impact as a teacher and mentor, and her lifelong love of learning. She was a mentor to so many women in the culinary world and had great affection for Les dames d‘Escoffier as an organization.”
