Panel Discussion: “Foods and Nutrition: Is that apple a day really an apple?”
The Foods and Nutrition panel will be exploring differences in traditionally produced heritage foods vs industrial produced foods with regards to taste, nutrition, human health, animal welfare, local economies, social justice and the environment. The panel includes a farmer, a chef educator, a restauranteur and an exercise and nutrition scientist all of whom are active in the Slow Food movement. This panel will leave no stone unturned as it explores our food systems from farm to table.
Gary Granata is the chair of Slow Food New Orleans and is a staunch advocate for Slow Food’s mission of Good, Clean and Fair Food for everyone. Gary holds a PhD in Exercise Science and Sports Nutrition from Georgia State University and a Masters in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Alabama. Gary combines his academic background with his lifelong passions of cooking, gardening and playing music to create unique educational experiences that exposes people to the simplicity of delicious food while challenging popular beliefs and attitudes towards food, physical activity and personal health. Gary’s personal motto of “Life is simple, we choose to make it difficult” is best applied when we “Eat, Give Thanks & Dance”!

Panel Discussion: “Lead Safe Urban Gardening”
Lead Safe Urban Gardening is organized to:
- Point out the dangers of lead contaminated soil;
- Explain where the most contaminated soil is located;
- Explain how to test for lead contaminated soil;
- Explain how to work around lead contaminated soil;
- Explain basics of good gardening soil and plants suitable to New Orleans climate.
- Fendley will be joined on the panel by Howard Mielke, Ph.D., Tulane University; Grant Estrade, Owner, Laughing Buddha Nursery; and Ian Willson, Owner, South Bound Gardens.
Gail Fendley is Broadcast Producer for the PBS program, “Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly.” Her career in television news spans more than twenty-five years as a producer in Charleston SC, Roanoke VA, Washington DC, San Diego CA, Los Angeles and New York City. Her awards include two Emmys, two Angel Awards, two Chicago International Film Festival Awards, International Film and Video Festival Silver Screen and Certificate for Creative Excellence Award and Unity Award in Media, Wilbur Award. Gail was selected by her peers to receive the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmy) Silver Circle Award for service in November 2008. She has returned to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast more than 60 times since Hurricane Katrina, either to produce segments or work toward lead Safe Louisiana and Michelle’s Earth Foundation’s goal of eradicating childhood lead poisoning in New Orleans. Gail graduated with a BS from Auburn University in Communications and a MA in American Literature from the University of Charleston.
