Longtime restaurant and nightclub pioneers, Ed and Joe Kane, of Big Night Entertainment are set to be inducted into the Massachusetts Hospitality Hall of Fame. On Monday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., the 23rd Annual Hospitality Hall of Fame Awards ceremony will be hosted at the Seaport World Trade Center, where the brothers will be among the honorees for their extraordinary feats in Boston’s nightlife and restaurant industry.
The Kane brothers were exposed to the hospitality business from an early age, as their father owned Kane’s Place, a local bar in Quincy, Mass. They began their solo careers in the restaurant industry 24 years ago when they purchased their first venture, the popular Hingham Harbor restaurant, Pages, and transformed it into a local legend – Stars On Hingham Harbor. Since then, they have opened nine other well-received restaurants and nightclubs in the New England area, including Hingham hotspots Tosca and Caffe Tosca, as well as venues (Shrine, Scorpion Bar,High Rollers) at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut and multiple establishments (GEM, Red Lantern, Empire) in their hometown of Boston.
Upon creating Big Night Entertainment Group in 2006, Ed and his partners developed, redesigned and continue to operate The Estate in Boston’s busiest nightlife area, The Alley. In 2008, the group branched out to MGM Grand at Foxwoods, opening Shrine Asian Kitchen Nightclub and Lounge. The sultry, dramatic restaurant and casino club quickly gained national recognition, placing 35th on Nightclub and Bar’s “Top 100 Nightclubs in the Country” list in 2009. Foxwoods’ Scorpion Bar Tequila Cantina and High Rollers Luxury Lanes & Lounge quickly followed in 2009 and 2010, respectively. And while the larger economy remained sluggish, they forged profitably ahead, opening a boutique Asian restaurant and lounge, Red Lantern, in Boston’s Back Bay in June 2011.
Earlier this year, the Kanes opened GEM, an English dining club-style lounge featuring upscale comfort food in Downtown Crossing, as well EMPIRE Asian Restaurant and Lounge located in Boston’s trendy seaport district.
Throughout the past 25 years in the business, the Kane Brothers have been bringing an international sense of style, food and design to the nightlife and restaurant business.
