District Distillery: A Design That Brings History to Life
The art of spirit distilling in America is as old as the country itself and its historic capital, making DC the perfect place to showcase distilling in a timeless space such as District Distilling, Co.
Griz Dwight, of award-winning D.C. firm GrizForm Design Architects, was recently tapped to create the District’s first distillery on historic 14th street. The distillery team called upon Griz to transform three, two-story 19th century row houses into a contemporary, multipurpose space as timeless as the art of distilling. By featuring the buildings existing, century-old neo-classical ceiling joists and exposed brick, the space successfully brings to life the long history of distilling.
District Distilling Co. is a marriage of age and character with the industrial elegance of modern, custom-made German still equipment. Stainless steel, technical valves and gauges, and copper are juxtaposed with oak aging barrels, exposed brick, and antiquated gray herringbone wood floors to create a space that brings the distilling process to life.
