Gunlock: “This is the government’s most substancial assault on calories. How is it that America, the land of the free, is turning into a nation of food nannies dictating what you choose to buy and consume?”
Today, new reports are out that the District of Columbia City Council may follow in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s footsteps, considering a measure that would enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large, sugar infused beverages sold in the District.
Julie Gunlock, Director of Women for Food Freedom at Independent Women’s Forum, issued the following statement:
“They say, as New York goes, so goes the nation. Government intervention on sugary drinks is now hitting the nation’s capitol.
“This is the government’s most substantial assault on calories. How is it that America, the land of the free, is turning into a nation of food nannies dictating what you choose to buy and consume?
“It’s time to stop the insanity. Study after study proves that regulations on the food industry does nothing to shrink waistlines or make Americans healthier. The only thing that American’s will shed is real freedom.
“The citizens of D.C. should be looking at the number of other issues on which the council should be focused. Just to name a few: high unemployment, rise in violent crime, broken metro system, severe traffic congestion, and unaffordable housing.
“Lawmakers, like members of the D.C. Council, who focus on the size of someone’s beverage are clearly out of touch with what Americans are concerned about in this day and age.”
